Wind, water, and the joy it all…
There are days on the water when everything seems to come together, the wind, the waves, the warmth of the sun, and the people around you. Days when you are reminded that perhaps this is what it is all about.
This past Thursday felt like one of those days.
The wind was warm and steady, the waves beautifully shaped, and the water seemed to invite us to simply go out and play.
And that may be the best word for it: …play. After all these years, there is still something wonderfully childlike about being lifted by the wind, skimming across the water, finding a wave, and letting the moment carry you.
Windsurfing has changed enormously since those early days. What was once mostly boards, sails and fins has evolved into a remarkable diversity of kiting, winging, windsurfing, foiling and finning. The equipment has changed; the possibilities have multiplied. Yet somehow, the essence has remained remarkably constant.
We are still people drawn to the same elemental pleasure—the wind in our sails, wings or kites, the water beneath us, and the freedom of moving through waves under our own chosen power.
And perhaps the most wonderful change has been the growing diversity on the water. Different equipment, different ages, different ways of riding, different levels of experience—and yet, for the most part, a shared understanding that we are all there for the same reason. We watch for one another, give each other room, and try not to turn our individual freedom into someone else's danger.
There is a quiet camaraderie in that.
Maybe it is a little addictive. How could it not be? There is something about wind and water that keeps calling us back.
But it is more than the ride itself. It is the laughter afterward, the stories, the nods and smiles between runs, the recognition of another person who understands why you keep coming back.
For all the differences and divisions that exist elsewhere in our lives, out here they seem, for a while, to matter a little less. The water has a way of leveling things.
We become simply fellow travellers in the wind.
And on a day like today, with friends nearby and the elements nearly perfect, there is really nothing more to ask for.
Just gratitude.
And the joy of being there.
